  6. Brooke, Ignorance and the fear of being a stranger is something that most people have in common in this day in age. If you look around you will see that everyone wants to follow the current trends and such. Nowadays its the free spirit like persona that everyone is actively trying to adopt and just follow it for the sake of not having to put up with trials because at the end of the day it has no truth and it has no cause.

So where am I getting at? I grew up a non-muslim and was very similar to you bohemian-hippie looking girl and that sooner or later became a veiled strongER muslim woman( i am a revert to Islam). I am an practicing (according to people like you a fundamentalist)Muslim girl and i have never in all my studies, time since being a Muslim and interactions with muslims ever seen the propagation of anything you have mentioned in your post. This is not in MUSLIM culture or in ISLAMIC TEACHINGS.

Your ignorance and your “opinion” is a poison that literally oppresses people like me (muslims). Take the time of day and go to a masjid pick up a Quran… go to a scholar learn and maybe you will find more than you bargained for. People are following you and possibly looking up to you and this is what you got to say about Islam and muslims? Then you are no better than the media and the oppressors that you are trying to “fight.” Are you a peacemaker or a person who wishful thinks with a costume of your persona. Islam is islam. muslims are muslims.

TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT ISLAM SAYS ABOUT OPPRESSION…

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Umar: Allah’s messenger (mohammad pbuh)said, “A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection . ”

Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas: The Prophet sent Mu’adh to Yemen and said, “Be afraid, from the curse of the oppressed as there is no screen between his invocation and Allah.”

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “Whoever has oppressed another person concerning his reputation or anything else, he should beg him to forgive him before the Day of Resurrection when there will be no money (to compensate for wrong deeds), but if he has good deeds, those good deeds will be taken from him according to his oppression which he has done, and if he has no good deeds, the sins of the oppressed person will be loaded on him.”

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: The Prophet said, “A woman entered the (Hell) Fire because of a cat which she had tied, neither giving it food nor setting it free to eat from the vermin of the earth.”

[Aal ‘Imraan 3:159] “And by the Mercy of Allaah, you dealt with them gently. And had you been severe and harsh‑hearted, they would have broken away from about you; so pass over (their faults), and ask (Allaah’s) forgiveness for them; and consult them in the affairs. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allaah, certainly, Allaah loves those who put their trust (in Him)”

  7. Dear Michel

Thank you for your comments and for sharing your personal story. It is always inspiring to hear of someone with such an open mind that can consciously chose a new path of life based on their own thoughts rather than those imposed on them from parents/teachers as we often see. I am very grateful for your response and the quotes against oppression.

Your ideas on the free spirit are worthy of a note though if described as a “trend,” it’s a trend that clearly never went out of style. I would argue that it was the “free spirit like persona” (which you frown upon) of Muhammad, Abraham, and Jesus that have lead us to the world we live in today filled with beautiful religion and spirituality.

I just want to be clear that this is in NO way an attack on the Islamic Religion at all. I only referenced an author whom I am currently reading and described some of the injustices in the world that I’ve been learning about. I am in no way pretending to be an expert on Islam as a religion or Muslims as people, or any religion at that. I have only read a few books on the subject and you are correct, I have not yet read the Quran. Religion at it’s core carries the value of peace and for what it is worth, all religions have good qualities that push people to better their community and help others, which is precisely what I am out in the world trying to do. Already in my travels I have met some of the kindest and caring people: Muslims, Christians and Jews…no different. Though just like anything else in life, the beautiful can turn ugly when fundamentalism comes into play and essential human rights are violated based on religious doctrine.

My intention in writing my thoughts are to build awareness about some inhuman acts that are still in practice today in some cultures. Enslavement and human trafficking is WRONG and it is a problem all over the globe. Every single country is involved in human trafficking and therefore every single person is to blame that it still exists. The majority of all people have turned a blind eye to it and have forgotten about the thousands upon thousands of women and children sold into sex-trafficking and brutally forced into being child soldiers. That is a WORLD PROBLEM, not just a religious or community one.

Cutting out the genitals of a 5 year old little girl is WRONG no matter which way you look at it. There is NO denying that. How can ANYONE defend this practice? Though you have been lucky enough to not have been exposed to this practice, did you know that between 100 million and 400 million women are victims of genital mutilation and 2-3 million are at risk of being faced with it annually? And if it is ok then why is it done is secrecy? I will not back down from this moral obligation of speaking out against these matters and neither should you.

I am truly sorry if it came off that I was targeting Muslims. Christianity ALSO practices Female Genital Mutilation and it has been noted in Judaism as well. This genital mutilation is in no way a religious requirement however it seems as though religion sometimes justifies it, as shown in Infidel. This was just one example of many human rights violations that are tied directly to religion, whether recognized or not.

It is important to recognize that none of us really fit into the boxes of stereotypes that you mentioned. To do so, is a dangerous sport. No one can be completely categorized nor should their ideas and beliefs be cloaked as propaganda. We should not be so quick to judge ourselves or others with such blanket terms as those you mentioned, “Fundamentalist Muslim” or even “hippie free spirit.”

We are just people, you and I, she and him; US. And we have to stand up for what is right and stand up against what is wrong; for we are HUMAN BEINGS. And to answer your question: Yes, I am striving to be a peacemaker. Yes I am a person wearing a costume, as we all are. Unfortunately it’s illegal to run naked in the streets…hippie, pious, atheist alike.

Thanks again for your comment, I truly appreciate it. It’s these dialogues that bring a greater understanding to both our worlds and help us become even more connected.

    Peace and freedom of speech.
    Together, Brooke and Levi
