Like many of you reading this, I was fortunate enough to have Levi and Brooke grace my presence at my home here in Israel. We thankfully shared a wonderful weekend together celebrating the Jewish New Year of trees, and enjoying the tasty fruits of wisdom (and mouth watering delight) gleaned from the rich Judaic tradition of spiritually guided ecology. Praise and exaltation abound!
Presumably, many people reading this were, and continue to be, as excited as I was when I first heard about their meritorious undertaking. Clearly, Levi and Brooke are tapping into (and reciprocally generating) a powerful current of social momentum pulsing throughout the globe. What it is, why it has come, where it is going, I do not believe anybody truly posits to know for certain. However, we are aware of its prevalent vibrancy and most of us are constantly seeking to contribute our part in its grand fulfillment.
As for their particular project, ThisIsTheWorldWeLiveIn, there is much to say. Weaving together a transnational quilt of shared ethical aspirations is no simple task. It is one thing to take note and appreciate the particular cloths woven of the diverse locations in this planetary loom- this task, they have no doubt already accomplished great success. However, arranging the pieces in a cohesive and meaningful fashion is another type of work all together, of much high caliber and sophistication. Whether this global quilt will manifest itself as an elegant and functional whole has yet to be seen.
It is my blessing to them that their work will generate this productive synergy, which will ultimately lead people to approach their wide span of human and ecological relationships with a heightened sense of moral awareness and individual obligation. I would briefly like to highlight the significance of this second point, as I feel it may be a unique contribution to this great dialogue of concerned global citizens. In the Judaic tradition, we are very keen to place the emphasis on obligations, as opposed to rights and entitlement. Far from being a mere point of rhetorical contention, this distinction between rights and obligations rests at a very fundamental crux of human consciousness and ensuing world view. I encourage everyone to contemplate the manifold significance of this distinction.
May we all be blessed with the inspiration to pursue Truth where we will find it, and the courage to live consistently within our own set of ethical and moral obligations.
